Running from Christmas

R-U-N!!! Is what comes to mind when fear sets in.  Run! Run from whatever it is that is terrifying you.

And that’s what we do…..

 Run from the unknown.

Run from the weight of responsibility.

Run from the incoming storm clouds.

Run from the struggles of life.

and we end up running

From the Blessings…

Little Mary felt the same way!  She wanted to run.  The fear that Mary felt was the one which causes us to run.  And Gabriel knew it.  When he told her, “Fear not”, he was begging her not to run.  This thing that was happening to her was going to bring the greatest blessing in her life.  This gift of God was not only for her, but for all mankind.  The very thing she longed to run from was the very thing that would set her free.

And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.

And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son,

and shalt call his name Jesus.

He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest:

and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:

And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever;

and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?

And the angel answered and said unto her,

The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee,

and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee:

therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called

the Son of God.

And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age:

and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.

For with God nothing shall be impossible.

Luke 1:30-37

As Mary’s fear abated, the Angel Gabriel began to tell her how the plan was going to unfold.  The Holy Spirit was going come upon her and cover her and when He was through, she would bring forth the Son of God.  From her a Savior, the Messiah, our Jesus would come.

No Angel will appear to you and I and tell us we are going to give birth to the Son of God physically.  But each born again believer has been called, commissioned, commanded to bring forth the Son of God to the world spiritually.  Each of us have a special calling on our lives.  It may be to teach, to preach, to sing, to write or any number of other things we could think of.  It doesn’t matter what the calling is, it matters how you answer.

When God called me to be a Pastor’s wife, yes a Minister’s wife is called also, I wondered how can this be.  I still wonder at times!  (LOL)  Now, I am confused and perplexed at the calling into Women’s Ministry.  Really?  God you want me?  How can that be when I know nothing?

God calls us according not to what we see in ourselves, but what He sees in us.  Just as He covered Mary with His Spirit, He covers us.  The Almighty overshadows us and fills us with His Son and that which comes from us is no longer us, but Jesus.

In all our humanity, in all our failures and all our faults, in all our shortcomings and inadequacies, what comes forth from us is still Jesus.  In spite of ourselves, when we are overshadowed by the Most High, the world sees Jesus.  His power and might covers up all the rest until only Jesus shines forth.  Not our weakness, but Jesus!  And Jesus alone.  How blessed we are!

I don’t know how God takes the ordinary and makes it extraordinary, but I know that He does.  I don’t know what God is calling on you to do.  It may be fighting a battle that seems impossible to win.  It may be walking through the shadow of death.  It may be clinging to Him as the storm surrounds you.   But, I do know God is calling.  I do know that whatever He has asked of you, He will see you through it.  I do know that whatever He is asking is to only bring you into a deeper relationship with Him.  And when all is said and done, you will receive a great and divine blessing that comes from God alone.

And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word.

And the angel departed from her.  Luke 1: 38

It wasn’t easy for Mary.  Can you imagine what took place as she tried to explain her calling to her parents?  Can you imagine her facing Joseph with the news?  What would her friends think?  Surely she would be on the lips of the women as they gathered at the well.  I can hear the laughing and mocking and teasing of men as she passes by.  Her road was not an easy one to walk.  Yet she choose to follow God down it, and in His great mercy, God sent her someone who would understand.

God sent her a friend and prayer partner in her cousin Elizabeth.  God knew it was going to be hard for Mary, just as He knows it will be hard for you.  Ever doubt and fear you have has already been taken into consideration by God.  He has prepared every detail and every provision you will need.  Will you trust Him?  Will you step out in faith and follow His lead?

Are you willing to accept the calling or will you run?

For with God all things are possible.  Luke 1: 37

Father gives us courage to accept your calling on our lives.  No matter whatever it may be, teach us to trust in your perfect love for us, that knows no end.  Remind us of Your promises that You will be with us, that You will never leave us, that You will never fail us.  Open our hearts and minds to the simple truth that our calling is to bring the Savior into a world of darkness.  Use us Oh, Lord.  Shine through us.  Overshadow us until all that is brought forth from us is Jesus, the Son of God.   And in His precious name we pray.  Amen.
